Thumbs down Rear main seal leak?

Took my car in for the brake squeal TSB and told them that I noticed an oil leak and diff leak last night when under the car. The oil leak is pretty bad. They don't know where it is coming from, but they suspect the rear main seal. The picture is not great, but you get the idea. Dripping from between the transmission and engine. They did the oil change about two weeks ago and it was not leaking. They also said that there is no good fix for the leaking diff yet.

Anyone else had such an oil leak?

Did you check your oil level? If they put too much oil it could have blown a seal

The MMI sensor reported the oil level was good. I just got a dipstick but had not yet installed it. It did happen right after the oil change, so you could be right. They seem pretty sharp, but they might have the B team on oil changes. I changed the oil on our Q7 the other day and was very careful not to over fill it. I would hope that they are as careful.

Oh, would the MMI screen tell you if it was over filled? The dipstick would certainly help with that.

Sucks about the possible RMS leak. As for the diff, it's not the actual differential leaking, it's the inner CV joints.

Is your car a MT? If it was the RMS wouldn't it most likely get into your clutch/fw and cause it to slip?

A few mods here and there

Yeah, 6MT. I thought the same thing since the oil should be on the flywheel/disk. My clutch is not slipping however. I could see the the flywheel from a small port near where the oil was leaking and what I could see was dry. So, maybe it can leak behind it and then run out without getting it on the flywheel? Does not sound possible. Who knows. Still waiting for the verdict from the service advisor.

Well, they are pulling the transmission and rear diff to replace seals. Still trying to get confirmation that the clutch does not have oil on it. It will supposedly be done late tomorrow or early Friday. They finished the TSB for the brakes today.

If you open the hood while checking the oil through the MMI you will get a oil level sensor in your DIS that is more accurate. It will appear briefly. In my case if the normal MMI reports full, the DIS display will show 1/8th lower than full

Good to know. Thanks. Will try that when I get the car back. I will also install the dipstick.

I got the same leak on my 2012 a4 s line 6 speed, its at the dealer now. my leak was worse dripping all over the driveway. rear main seal leak and they had to change the clutch also becuase it got contaminated. well thats what they are telling me. its been there for a week so i should be getting it back today so lets see what really happen.

Still don't have my car back yet (dropped off on Wednesday). They are still waiting on the rear main seal parts (seal only I imagine, but maybe the flywheel bolts are one time use). They did pull the rear diff and seal the issue there. The TSB for the brakes was done also. Supposedly the car will be done on Tuesday, so a week without the car. I have the AWE exhaust in the garage waiting to go on, so it has been hard to wait.

Yeah, got a 2012 A4 Quattro loaner with 3500 miles on it. It is ok, but I would prefer a R8 loaner. lol

I thought Richi had a similar issue with this as well.

I hope it doesnt become a known problem ala waterpumps

Well, just got a call from Classic Audi to update me on my car. They said they pulled the transmission only to find that the oil leak was not the rear main seal. It was the "oil filter housing". Supposedly it was not the filter cover, but the acutal housing and that it was replaced. I am sort of doubting this story and wonder if the filter cover was not tight. Either way, it was not the rear main seal. The car should be ready today.
